A dryer that once finished a load in under an hour but now needs two or three cycles is one of the calls we get most. The good news: the cause is almost always easy to track down.

A Clogged Vent Line Is the Most Common Cause

Lint builds up inside the vent line that runs from the dryer to the outside of your home, not just in the lint trap. Over time this restricts airflow, which means hot, damp air has nowhere to go, and clothes stay damp longer.

An Overloaded Drum

Just like a washer, a dryer stuffed too full cannot let air circulate around each item properly. Splitting a large load into two smaller ones is often enough to solve the problem entirely.

A Failing Heating Element

If the dryer is running but barely producing any heat, a worn heating element is a likely cause. This part does most of the work in drying clothes quickly, and once it starts to fail, dry times climb steadily.

A Faulty Moisture Sensor

Many newer dryers use a moisture sensor to decide when a load is dry. If this sensor gets coated with fabric softener residue, it can misread how wet the clothes are and keep running longer cycles than necessary.

When to Call for Repair

If clearing the lint trap and checking the load size does not help, it is worth having the vent line and heating element checked. A clogged vent in particular is not just an inconvenience, it can also become a safety concern over time.
